Waipahu Defeats Resilient Pearl City
Despite an 8-run deficit in the fifth inning, Pearl City almost came all the way back, eventually falling 8-7 to Waipahu on Sunday. Pearl City tallied seven runs in the failed comeback. Kevin Fujioka, Preston Yoshino, Christopher Goya, Austyn Nagamine, Chad Quillopo, and Goya fueled the rally with RBIs.
Pearl City fell behind early in the loss. Waipahu took the lead on a groundout in the second inning.
Waipahu got things moving in the second inning, when Derek Costigan grounded out, scoring one run.
Pearl City tallied four runs in the sixth inning. Fujioka, Yoshino, Goya, and Nagamine all moved runners across the plate with RBIs in the inning.
Waipahu scored four runs in the fifth inning. Kamalu Neal and Chevas Numata powered the big inning with RBIs.
Shaun Kiriu got the win for Waipahu. The fireballer went five innings, allowing zero runs on four hits and striking out three. Blane Muraoka, David Torigoe, and Kaipo Paiva all put in work in relief out of the bullpen, steering their team towards the victory. Muraoka recorded the last five outs to earn the save for Waipahu.
Daven Hermosura took the loss for Pearl City. The pitcher lasted three innings, allowing four hits and two runs while striking out one and walking zero.
Pearl City tallied eight hits. Quillopo and Goya all managed multiple hits for Pearl City. Goya and Quillopo all had two hits to lead Pearl City.
Tyler Hanzawa led Waipahu with three hits in four at bats.
