The Oahu AJA Baseball League Championship Tournament continued with a Winners bracket game on Sunday (3/2/25) at the Ala Wai between Waialae and Waipahu, the 2 remaining undefeated Tournament teams. Waipahu won 5 to 1 in a duel of 9 inning iron man performances by both starting pitchers, Waipahu’s Skyler Yamamoto and Waialae’s Mark Okano. Such gritty performances by both starting pitchers has not been seen by AJA baseball fans for years.
Waipahu prevailed behind the masterful complete 9 inning 136 pitches performance of starting pitcher Skyler Yamamoto, who stymied the hard hitting Waialae lineup by scattering 10 hits, striking out 3 and walking only 2 while stranding 8 baserunners. Although Waialae put runners on base in every inning except the 9th, Yamamoto kept Waialae off the scoreboard except for 1 run in the 3rd inning. Meanwhile, Waialae starting pitcher Mark Okano matched Waipahu’s Yamamoto inning by inning except for the 4th inning when he allowed 4 runs. Okano threw 151 pitches, allowing 11 hits, striking out 5 while walking 4.
Waipahu combined 3 hits, 3 walks and a wild pitch to score 4 runs in their eventful 4th inning. Waipahu was led by their batting lineup’s 1st 3 batters, Justin Protacio with 4 hits & 1 rbi, Logan Salcedo with 2 hits and Chevas Numata with 2 hits & 2 rbi. Jordan Kurokawa, Gavin Okada and AD Mols led Waialae with 2 hits each with Kurokawa driving in the sole Waialae run.
Waialae remains in contention in this double elimination Tournament. Waialae will play Game 9 on Thursday (3/6/25) 7pm at the Ala Wai against the Winner of the Manoa vs Mililani game (Game 8 Wednesday 3/5/25 7pm at the Ala Wai).
Waipahu advances to Game 10 (possible Championship Game) on Sunday (3/9/25) at the Ala Wai 10am against the Game 9 Winner. If Waipahu WINS, Waipahu wins the 2024-25 Oahu AJA Baseball League Championship.
However, if the Game 9 Winner beats Waipahu in Game 10, then an IF NECESSARY game (Game 11 @1pm) between Waipahu and the Game 9 Winner will be played to determine the 2024-25 Oahu AJA Baseball League Champion.
