Waipahu Evens the Championship Series with 6 to 4 Win Over Waialae
Waipahu beat Waialae 6 to 4 behind a clutch 2 out bases loaded 3 rbi double in the 8th inning by Logan Salcedo to break a 2 to 2 tie game at that point and clutch pitching by Shaun Kiriu to hold off Waialae and win the 2nd game of the Best of 3 Championship Series. Waipahu’s win forces a Winner take all CHAMPIONSHIP game (3rd game), scheduled for Thursday (3/17/22) 7pm at the Ala Wai.
In the third inning, Waipahu got their offense started when Alika Kuraoka singled on a 2-1 count, scoring Logan Salcedo with one run. Waialae evened things up in the bottom of the 3rd when Okada singled home Nitahara.
Waipahu took the lead again in the 5th when Kuraoka solo homered deep into the Ala Wai canal.
Waialae evened things up at 2 to 2 in the bottom of the seventh inning when Kimo Wilinski doubled on a 2-0 count with 2 out, scoring Okada with one run.
Waipahu took the lead again in the 8th when Logan Salcedo doubled with 2 outs & the bases loaded to drive in 3 runs and open up the lead to make it 5 to 2.
Waialae narrowed the lead to 5 to 3 in the bottom of the 8th when AD Mols doubled deep into left to drive in DJ Andrade.
After Waipahu scored one run in the top of the ninth, Waialae answered with one of their own. Waipahu scored when Dylan Salcedo singled on a 1-1 count driving in pinch runner Derek Costigan, who stole 2nd base with 2 outs to get in scoring position. Waialae answered in the bottom of the 9th when Kyle Watase drove in one run on a fielders choice groundball. Waialae continued fighting, loading the bases with one out. Waipahu pitcher Shaun Kiriu buckled down to get the final two outs on a strikeout and fielder’s choice grounder to end the threat and finish the game.
Waialae totaled 12 hits in the game. Gavin Okada, Drayson Ito, Wilinski, and Morita all collected multiple hits for Waialae. Okada went 3-for-4 at the plate to lead Waialae in hits. Waialae was sure-handed and didn’t commit a single error. Tyler Nitahara made the most plays with eight.
Waipahu tallied 11 hits in the game. Kuraoka, Salcedo, and Salcedo each had multiple hits for Waipahu.
Shaun Kiriu was the winning pitcher for Waipahu. The pitcher pitched the final two and a third innings, allowing three hits and two unearned runs while striking out two and walking one.
David Torigoe started the game for Waipahu. The ace lasted six and two-thirds innings, allowing nine hits and two runs while striking out five.
Mark Okano took the tough loss for Waialae. The bulldog lasted nine innings, allowing 11 hits and six runs while striking out seven.
