Waipahu edged out Waialae 8 to 7 in extra innings (10 innings) to win the Oahu AJA Baseball League Championship at Hans L’Orange Park on Sunday (3/17/19). Waipahu was led by the big game pitching of Shaun Kiriu, who gave up only 1 unearned run over the game’s last 5 innings on only 2 days rest & after throwing 127 pitches in Thursday’s game. Waipahu’s scoring was led by Zach Kometani’s 2 Homeruns and the clutch hitting of Keenan Sue who drove in the winning run in the 10th inning in addition to Homering earlier in the game. Rev Wong, Keenan Sue & Dylan Salcedo also paired hits.
Waialae was led by Kyle Watase’s 3 hits & 3 RBI, and 2 hits by DJ Andrade.
Waipahu will represent Oahu against Maui, Kauai and the Big Island in the 84th Annual Hawaii State AJA Baseball Championship tournament on April 6-7, 2019, in Hilo, hosted this year by the Hawaii AJA Memorial Baseball League.
Waipahu edges Waialae in Extra Innings to Win the Oahu AJA Baseball Championship Game
- Waialae lost the lead late in an 8-7 defeat to Waipahu on Sunday. The game was tied at seven with Waipahu batting in the top of the tenth when Keenan Sue singled on the first pitch of the at bat, driving in Revan Wong who had walked to get on base and advanced to 2nd on a walk to Chevas Numata.
- Waipahu captured the early lead in the top of the 1st inning on a 2 run homer to deep left by Zach Kometani.
- Waialae got back to within a run in the 2nd inning as Kyle Watase singled and then scored on a deep drive off the 400 ft center field gates by Kainalu Pitoy.
- Waialae took the lead in the third inning, tallying 4 runs in the inning. After 2 consecutive walks and a sacrifice bunt, Brandon Roberts was intentionally walked to load the bases. Kyle Watase came through with a 2 rbi single. The 3rd run scored on a walk to Pitoy. The 4th run scored on a Waipahu error on a fly ball off Brandon Kop’s bat.
- After Waipahu scored one run in the top of the fourth on a homerun by Keenan Sue, Waialae answered with one run of their own as Watase singled on a 1-2 count, driving in his 3rd run of the day.
- In the 5th inning, Waipahu closed Waialae’s lead to 1 run when after 2 outs to start the inning, Zach Kometani hit a solo homer to plate a run and his 3rd rbi of the day. Keenan Sue kept the rally going by bunting for a base hit and advancing to 2nd base on an errant throw. Sue then scored Waipahu’s 5th run on a single by Costigan.
- In the top of the 6th inning, Waipahu tied the score at 6 to 6 by scoring a run after 2 outs to start the inning with a walk, base hit and errant pick off throw.
- Waipahu took the lead at 7 to 6 in the 8th inning on a clutch rbi single by Revan Wong after a walk, fielders choice and single by Logan Salcedo.
- In the bottom of the ninth inning with 2 outs, Waialae tied the score at seven apiece as Dylan Nakatsuka (pinch running for Mark Okano), stole 3rd base and scored on the errant throw.
- David Torigoe led things off on the pitcher’s mound for Waipahu . He went five innings, allowing six runs on six hits. Winning pitcher Shaun Kiriu pitched the last 5 innings, allowing only 1 unearned run on 3 hits.
- Jeremy Dela Cruz started the game for Waialae . He lasted five innings, allowing eight hits and five runs while striking out one. Josh Nakamura and Ken Nakamoto entered the game as relief, throwing four and a third innings and two-thirds of an inning respectively.
- Waipahu mashed three home runs on the day. Zach Kometani had a dinger in the first and fifth innings. Sue went yard in the fourth inning.
- Waialae racked up nine hits on the day. Watase and DJ Andrade all managed multiple hits for Waialae . Watase went 3-for-5 at the plate to lead Waialae in hits.
- Waipahu tallied 13 hits in the game. Sue, Revan Wong, Kometani, and Dylan Salcedo each managed multiple hits for Waipahu . Sue led Waipahu with three hits in six at bats.
