Oahu (Waialae) Breaks Tie In Eighth Inning To Defeat Maui (Wailuku)
Oahu (Waialae) broke open a tie late in Game 1 of the 85th Annual 2022 Hawaii State AJA Baseball Tournament in a 7-5 victory over Maui (Wailuku) on Saturday (April 2, 2022). The game was tied at five with Oahu batting in the top of the eighth when Kimo Wilinski singled on a 1-2 count to drive in Jordan Murai with the go ahead run and Mark Okano’s sacrifice fly later drove in Wilinski with an insurance run.
Oahu opened up scoring in the top of the first inning, when an error scored one run and continued with Oahu batting around and scoring 4 total runs on RBI walks by Davin Morita & Jordan Murai and a sacrifice fly RBI by DJ Andrade. Maui responded with three runs in the first inning. Maui batters contributing to the big inning included Jacob Chong driving in a run in the inning with a single.
Oahu opened up their lead in the 2nd with Mark Okano booming a double off the left field wall, driving in Kyle Watase, who had walked earlier in the inning. Maui answered with 2 runs in the bottom of the third inning to tie things up at five when pinch hitter Logan Kanamu and centerfielder CJ Santos singled in runs.
Jeremy Delacruz was the winning pitcher for Oahu. Delacruz bulldogged his way through, surrendering only five runs on 12 hits over seven innings, after giving up 5 runs in the first 3 innings, striking out five and walking one. Josh Nakamura threw the final two innings in relief out of the bullpen to earn the save.
Justin Cayaban took the loss for Maui. The lefty went six and a third innings, allowing three runs on five hits and striking out one. Lance Fujii started the game for Maui. The hurler allowed two hits and four runs over one inning, striking out one.
Oahu totaled seven hits against Maui’s 12 hits. Wilinski and Murai each collected two hits to lead Oahu.
Maui had 12 hits in the game. Jamie Aloy, Jacob Chang, Edison Sakata & Chaz Ishikawa all paired hits to lead Maui.
